HOMES FOR QUEENSLANDERS: FAST-TRACK PROCESS FOR SUNSHINE COAST AFFORDABLE HOMES
24th July 2024
• Birtinya affordable housing project goes through Miles Government’s fast-track Ministerial Infrastructure Designation (MID) process
• 90-unit project being proposed by Brisbane Housing Company (BHC)
• Part of Miles Government’s Homes for Queenslanders plan to deliver one million more homes
In a first for the Sunshine Coast, a major affordable housing project proposed for Birtinya will progress through the Miles Government’s MID process in a bid to fast-track development.
Brisbane Housing Company has lodged an application for a Ministerial Infrastructure Designation for the project.
The project is proposed to include 90 affordable housing units in an eight-storey tower.
The MID provides an alternative to local council development applications and is managed by the Department of Housing, Local Government, Planning and Public Works, with input from other government agencies.
Consultation is now open on the project, with the Planning Minister to make a final decision after reviewing the assessment undertaken by the Department and community consultation feedback.
It comes after 40 homes were recently completed at Little Mountain in a partnership between the Miles Government and Churches of Christ, as well as the purchase of homes exiting the National Rental Affordability Scheme in the Kawana electorate.
Quotes attributable to Planning Minister Meaghan Scanlon:
“We need more affordable housing on the Sunshine Coast, it’s that simple.
“This project, alongside the almost 1,000 social homes we have under construction, shows that we’re delivering our Homes for Queenslanders plan.
“Through the MID process, we’re able to streamline the approvals needed for large social and affordable developments across the state, and get shovels in the ground faster.
“That’s unlike the LNP who are still blocking 8,000 Queenslanders from getting their own home by standing in the way of Help to Buy legislation.
“If Jarrod Bleijie really cared about the Sunshine Coast, then he’d stand up to Peter Dutton and tell him to get out of the way.”
Quotes attributable to Member for Nicklin Rob Skelton:
“Whether it’s building new social homes, working with groups like IFYS to help young people at risk of homelessness or pulling levers to fast-track approvals for affordable housing – it’s the Miles Labor Government doing what matters for the Sunshine Coast.
