PALMWOODS COMMUNITY TO HAVE SAY ON SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS

6th December 2021

The Palmwoods community is being urged to have a say on proposed road safety improvements in the area.

Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has unveiled concept designs for proposed pedestrian safety upgrades at three locations on Margaret Street in response to local concerns.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the proposal included traffic-calming devices, upgrades to existing crossings near the post office and Rick's Garage, and a new crossing near the Palmwoods Bakery.

"TMR carried out investigations into pedestrian-related road safety improvements in recent months, complementing the previous planning undertaken by Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) as part of its Placemaking Palmwoods Master Plan," Mr Bailey said.

"A range of factors were carefully considered throughout the concept design process to determine the suitability and location of the improvements.

"The proposed changes will give locals and visitors greater connectivity and improve safety through traffic-calming devices, additional street lighting and warning signs.

"We recognise the importance of on-street parking to local businesses, residents and visitors and have tried to minimise car parking impacts as much as possible."

Robert Skelton, Member for Nicklin said consultation was now open and urged the community to have a say.

"Feedback will be used to help understand community preferences, so we can progress detailed design and deliver improvements at priority locations as funding becomes available," he said.

"We know Palmwoods locals are passionate about their community, so I encourage everyone to jump online, view the proposal in further detail and provide feedback.

"In addition, TMR in consultation with SCC, is also undertaking further investigations to assess the potential for upgrades near the Jubilee Drive and Chevallum Road intersections and will provide more information to the community when they can."

Consultation will close on 21 January, 2022.
